Support for asylum seekers

Bike and welcome sign

Since its inception, DASSAN’s role has been primarily to advocate for and support the large numbers of people that have been detained in detention centres in the Darwin region. Now that these detention centres have closed, and given our committed volunteer base and the continuing needs of people seeking asylum, DASSAN now focuses on supporting asylum seekers living in our community.

‘That was so lovely, you lift up our spirits, we were so lonely and sad.  When you left we just felt you bring our groove back.’

Community awareness
A key part of our work is to challenge the fear and misinformation in the community. We hold a stall at Nightcliff markets, send out a monthly update, communicate through mainstream media as well as Facebook and Twitter, hold community events where we host high profile speakers, organise film nights, hold regular vigils and speak to community organisations.

Working for change
We advocate for change and justice in Australia’s immigration system. This includes preparing submissions to government inquiries, meeting with high level stakeholders, as well as supporting protests against the current policies.
